The Summary

When it comes to choosing earbuds, there are hundreds of different products available. Skullcandy are a popular brand for headphones of all shapes and sizes, and their Indy True Earbuds are the company’s second attempt at a truly wireless headphone. This model followed the Skullcandy Push Truly Wireless headphones, but the two products are significantly different. We’ve reviewed the Skullcandy Indy True Earbuds to give you the lowdown on this popular listening choice.

Why we like it 👍
  • Comfortable and easy fit that can be used for hours without discomfort.
  • Solid sound isolation when used in a noisy environment.
  • Come with a handy portable charging case which is small enough to fit in a pocket of bag.
  • Uses Bluetooth 5.0 and offers a strong connection to all devices.
  • Pairing process is straightforward and fast.
  • The price isn’t unreasonable for the quality of the earbuds.
  • Sound quality is fun and punchy
  • The earbuds are sweat and dust resistant, perfect for using while exercising.
Why we don't like it 👎
  • Battery life is average, and they require charging fairly regularly.
  • Touch controls on the earbuds can be inconsistent.
  • Skullcandy branding is a bit overpowering.
  • Repairing to a second device can be time consuming and longwinded.
  • The sound is very bass heavy with little clarity and resolution.
  • The selection of ear tips and wings is limited.

The VERDICT™

The Skullcandy Indy True Earbuds are reasonably priced and make for good value for money considering their overall quality. Whilst they might not offer the best sound quality out of the earbuds available today, they are perfectly suited to those looking for wireless headphones for the gym or the commute.

the design

Design

The overall look of the Skullcandy Indy True Earbuds is fairly bland and basic, with a black finish and Skullcandy branding which could be considered a bit much for some. The microphone and batteries are both housed in the downward pointing stalks, and on the side of the earbuds are touch controls which allow you to adjust volume and playback quickly.

Battery Life

The battery life of the Skullcandy Indy True earbuds is a bit disappointing and definitely the feature that really lets these headphones down. The earbuds themselves will last about 4 to 5 hours before they need a charge, and the charging case can hold 16 hours of battery before that needs a recharge as well. Compared with other earbud models with similarly sized charging cases, this is at the lower end of the battery life spectrum.

Performance

Like with most Skullcandy products, bass is strong and prominent in the Indy True Earbuds. This emphasis on bass makes the sound quality punchy and fun but does lack accuracy for some music. Mid-range frequencies can be obscured by the bass and high frequencies are rolled off to ensure the sound quality never comes across too harsh.

Comfort

These in ear headphones are refreshingly comfortable compared to other models which can be painful or a nuisance to keep in the ear. The Skullcandy Indy True Earbuds can be worn for hours at a time without getting uncomfortable. They come with a selection of ear tips and wings; however, this selection is limited to just small, medium and large. Once you have found an ear tip size that works for you, these earbuds are great for staying in the ear, even whilst exercising.
