Top 10 Best Dash Cams

The road can be an unpredictable place. Whether it’s reckless drivers or speed demons, you’ll always need to have your wits about you.

While you may be the best driver on the road, sometimes accidents can happen despite your best efforts. This is why you should always practice good safety habits.

Practicing good situational awareness and keeping within the speed limit can help you stay safe most of the time. However, should you find yourself getting involved in an accident, it’s important that you’re covered legally.

Dash cams provide an additional level of security as the threat of getting caught on camera is often enough to discourage would-be thieves or road bullies.

All these points make dash cams a solid investment for anyone who owns a vehicle of some kind. So if you’re looking to invest in a dash cam, read on as we take you through our list of the best dash cams available on the market.

The Verdicts

1

Aigoss Dash Cam

CHECK PRICE

Our Verdict

Power source: Built-in capacitor

Package Dimensions: 13 x 10 x 8.2 cm; 280 Grams

Date First Available: 29 Jun. 2020

Manufacturer: Aigoss

Brought to you by Aigoss; a China-based manufacturer of vehicle accessories, the Aigoss dash cam brings together simplicity and functionality in a single-package. Recording at 1080p, you can be assured of clear, crisp footage so that you don’t miss anything.

An interesting feature of the Aigoss is the g-sensor. When the g-sensor is triggered by any sudden jolts, the dash cam automatically stores the captured footage thus ensuring that valuable footage is not accidentally deleted.

Besides that, the Aigoss boasts a variety of other functions such as parking mode. In parking mode, the dash cam switches to auxiliary power and continues recording for a short-period of time.

The Aigoss however is let down by the relatively weak battery which often lasts for 30 minutes or less before going flat. Also, you’ll need to buy your own microSD card as the Aigoss does not ship with one.

Our verdict: A solid option if you’re looking for a simple and reliable dash cam. Let down by the small-capacity battery.

2

Like other dash cams, the IXROAD also comes with a variety of other functions such as parking mode and automatic video lock thanks to an integrated sensor. The power-saving function even allows the IXROAD to double as a rear-view mirror.

Some complaints have been raised with regards to flimsy construction and compatibility issues with some vehicles.

Vantrue N4 3 Channel Dash Cam

CHECK PRICE

Our Verdict

Power source: Built-in capacitor

Package Dimensions: 14.6 x 13.3 x 10.7 cm; 799 Grams

Date First Available: 21 Jan. 2020

Manufacturer: VANTRUE

The Vantrue N4 three channel dash cam allows users to record footage inside, outside and even around your vehicle. All in crystal clear 1440p for the front-facing camera and 1080p for rear and internal cameras.

With cutting edge infra-red technology and automatic exposure adjustment, the N4 makes night recording a cinch – something especially useful if you regularly drive after dark.

A feature which admittedly doesn’t get enough attention is the N4’s weather resistant capacitor. Given that dash cams are regularly exposed to extreme weather conditions i.e. heat and/or cold, the N4’s specially designed weather-proof capacitor makes it an interesting buy.

Despite all these features, the N4 does have some drawbacks. For starters, some N4 owners have noted that the device’s parking mode can be a bit unpredictable. One even mentioned how the N4 failed to capture any footage when his parked car was hit.

Another grouse that users had was the rather poor build-quality. From the rather flimsy construction to the faulty suction device, it’s clear that improvements can be made in this area.

Our verdict: Not a bad option if you’re in the market for both a front and rear-facing dash camera. Slightly disappointed by the inferior build-quality and clumsy user interface.

With the downloadable Garmin Drive app, you’ll be able to utilize automatic multi sided sync to simultaneously play footage from various angles. Something that definitely makes the Garmin Dash Cam 46 stand out from its competitors.

On the downside, this dash cam has a tendency to “forget” settings and overheat when recording at the highest settings. Also, you’ll need to purchase a Garmin auxiliary cable if you want to record parking footage.

Our verdict: The Garmin 46 Dash Cam definitely brings plenty to the table with driver alerts and voice control. Possible letdowns include issues with firmware along with a tendency to sometimes overheat.

Buying a Dash Cam? Read our Quick Buyers Guide!

Which is the best dash cam?

Dash cams are a dime a dozen but at the end, we’d have to go with the TOGUARD CE63. For it’s price, it goes without saying that the CE63 is the best budget dash cam on the market. Sturdy and reliable with just enough features to make it worthwhile, the CE63 is our choice.

How much is a dash cam?

Fortunately for most of us, the best dash cams are relatively affordable. In fact, with so many manufacturers on the market, you’ll be spoilt for choice. If you’re on a tight budget, some of the more affordable budget dash cams can be snapped up for less than $50.

How does a dash cam work?

Dash cams are essentially on-board cameras mounted on a vehicle’s dashboard (hence the name) or centre console that captures driving footage. Thus providing video evidence to the relevant authorities in the event of an accident.

Do dash cams work when the car is off?

It all depends on the model of dash cam used and your vehicle. Some dash cams go into auxiliary power mode when the vehicle is turned off. This allows it to continue recording footage even when the car is parked and turned off.

Other models lack this feature as they draw power directly from the vehicle (usually via the cigarette lighter socket). Again, all this depends on the vehicle that you’re driving. Some manufacturers continue powering cabin electronics even when the engine is turned off.

Ideally, you’ll want to go through the owner’s manual just to be sure. If security is a concern, you’ll want to ensure that your dash cam continues recording even when the engine is turned off.

Can you use a dash cam as a webcam?

Most budget dash cams store their media on a SD card device which means that they offer limited functionality. However higher-end variants allow for streaming over Wi-Fi which allows them to be used as a webcam of sorts.
