The Verdicts

1

Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5-inch Tablet

CHECK PRICE

Our Verdict
  • Brand: Samsung
  • Dimensions: 24.74 x 0.66 x 17.73 cm
  • Weight: 460.85 grams
  • Hard drive size: 16 GB
  • Screen display size: 10.5 Inches
  • Resolution: 1600p
  • Processor Speed: 1.9 GHz
  • Ram: 3 GB

Despite the introduction of dozens of competitors into the android tablet market, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab series remains to be one of the best spec Android tablets on the market. So good in fact that many regard it as being the closest competitor that Apple has to its iPad range.

Thin, light and fast, the Galaxy Tab S offers a good compromise between performance and affordability. The super AMOLED display offers sharp, crisp images that can be viewed from any angle along with excellent sound quality courtesy of it’s speakers.

Flipping through apps felt natural with performance comparable to that of an iPad. The smooth, solid construction of the casing gave us confidence that this tablet is able to withstand the knocks of everyday life.

Our Verdict: Good build quality, smooth user experience and a powerful processor, makes this one tablet feel like a premium device.  Only let down is the relatively weak battery life and low memory space.

2

CHUWI UBook Tablet 11.6”

CHECK PRICE

Our Verdict
  • Brand: CHUWI
  • Dimensions: 37 x 22.5 x 5.4 cm
  • Weight: 1.28 Kilograms
  • Hard drive size: 256 GB (SSD)
  • Screen display size: 11.6 Inches
  • Resolution: 1080p
  • Processor Speed: 1.1 Ghz
  • RAM: 8 GB

A unique laptop/tablet hybrid, the CHUWI UBook Tablet is one of the larger and heavier devices on our list. Off the get-go it’s clear that the CHUWI is designed with utility-focused users in mind. At 11.6 inches and 1080p, the display quality on this tablet is great providing crystal clear images.

Packaged with a u-shaped kickstand that allows it to switch in between various modes and a stylus the CHUWI shines in situations where you’ll find yourself having to work on the go.

With a massive 256 GB hard disk size, the CHUWI should be more than up to the task of storing any files that you may have.

The processor isn’t amazingly quick but it’s sufficient for those looking to perform office-related tasks such as working on spreadsheets and sending emails. With an 8-hour battery life, the CHUWI should be able to last you through the day.

However, the lack of processing power can be frustrating for those looking to use their tablets as a gaming device. It often feels as if the processor chugs along on more intense games.

The sound quality or lack thereof is another issue as the speakers lack any type of punch. Finally, the device is definitely a heavy one coming in at above 1kg, which can be a turn off for some.

A decent offering from a relatively new player – provides decent performance for most tasks. Slightly let down by its weight and poor sound quality.

3

Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus tablet, 8"

CHECK PRICE

Our Verdict
  • Brand: Amazon
  • Dimensions: 20.2 x 13.7 x 0.97 cm
  • Weight: 355g
  • Hard drive size: 32/64 GB
  • Screen display size: 8 Inches
  • Resolution: 720p
  • Processor Speed: Quad-core 2.0 GHz
  • RAM: 3 GB

Amazon’s range of Fire tablets have long been renowned for being small yet packed with a variety of features. With 3 GB of RAM and a quad-core 2.0 GHz processor, the HD 8 is relatively powerful. Don’t expect this one to be a hardcore gaming tablet, instead think of it more as a companion device.

Something to keep you occupied on the train or for when you’re out of town with Kindle or Amazon Prime. The first thing most of us noticed is how light and easily portable the HD 8 actually is. With an 8 inch screen and just 355g, the HD 8 can be slipped easily into your pocket or travel bag.

As an added plus, you’ll have Amazon’s Alexa at your beck and call along with wireless charging – although you’ll have to purchase the dock separately.  For its size, the HD 8 is a strong contender in the market for Android tablets.

The lack of features and price however may be a point of contention for some. It should be noted that the HD 8 does not play well with Google apps or the Google Playstore. Additionally, complaints have been raised with annoying advertisements and all manner of bloatware.

Our Verdict: The HD8 is a solid Android tablet for casual users looking to read, stream and maybe play some basic games. However, the lack of Google app support and bloatware can be a problem for some.

4

Huawei MediaPad T5 10"

CHECK PRICE

Our Verdict
  • Brand: Huawei
  • Dimensions: 16.4 x 0.78 x 24.3 cm
  • Weight: 460 Grams
  • Hard drive size: 64 GB
  • Screen display size: 10 Inches
  • Resolution: 1080p
  • Processor Speed: 8 Ghz
  • RAM: 4 Gb

Manufactured by Huawei, the Mediapad T5 brings together the winning combination of performance and price in a single package. With 4 Gb of RAM and an octa-core processor, the Mediapad T5 certainly packs quite a punch.

Running on the Android 8.0 Oreo, the Huawei performed well on a variety of stress tests. From running multiple apps simultaneously to playing PUBG and Call of Duty, there can be no doubt that this is one of the fastest Android tablets available.

With a high-definition 10 inch screen, images are crisp and clear which made watching videos and streaming all the more enjoyable.

All of this performance comes at a price as the screen resolution noticeably drops when playing more demanding games such as Call of Duty. With it’s relatively affordable price, lightweight and slim design, the Mediapad T5 is a relatively affordable yet capable tablet for its price.

Our Verdict: If you’ve been sceptical of the recent generation of Chinese tablet PCs, maybe the Mediapad T5 acn help you change your mind.

5

Samsung Galaxy Tab S5E 10.5”

CHECK PRICE

Our Verdict
  • Brand: Samsung
  • Dimensions: 24.5 x 16 x 0.55 cm
  • Weight: 400 Grams
  • Hard drive size: 64 Gb
  • Screen display size:
  • Resolution: 1080p
  • Processor Speed: 3.7 Ghz
  • RAM: 64 Gb

Weighing in at just 400 grams with a 10.5 inch screen, the Galaxy Tab S5E may quite likely be the best 10.5” tablet available now. With a monstrous 3.7 Ghz processor and 64 Gb of RAM, we could hardly keep our hands off the S5E.

Thanks to its crystal clear AMOLED screen which boasts a resolution of 1600 x 2560, watching shows and streaming videos on this device was a blast. Images were rendered perfectly and you could be forgiven for mistaking it for an actual flat-screen TV.

For all the gamers out there, the S5E has no trouble handling even the most demanding of games. In fact, the entire time we noticed that there were hardly any frame rate drops and images were rendered perfectly.

Sound comes through perfectly from the speakers – if you want a little extra, you can always make use of a bluetooth speaker.

However, the S5E isn’t all perfect. It is unfortunately let down by its screen refresh rate which can result in a weird distortion effect appearing on-screen. While not terribly distracting it is noticeable which can be irritating for some.

Overall we would say that the S5E is one of the best Android tablets we’ve reviewed so far. A few minor issues here and there and a rather steep price may put some off.

Our Verdict: Blistering speeds with a great processor and plenty of RAM makes this one of the best spec’d Android tablets. Only let down by a few niggling issues here and there.

6

Our Verdict
  • Brand: Amazon
  • Dimensions: 26.2 x 15.9 x 098 cm
  • Weight: 504 Grams

  • Screen display size: 10.1 inches
  • Resolution: 1080p

Just like it’s smaller cousin, the Amazon Fire HD 10 Tablet is optimized for those on the go. Whether you’re commuting, on a flight overseas or simply spending the evening at home, the HD 10 promises users a smooth operating experience all around.

Addressing the complaints faced by users of the previous generation HD 10 tablets, the current generation offers significantly more memory and improved performance. Using the tablet, you can clearly tell that the upgrades were worth it.

The interface definitely feels much better as switching between apps is snappy and responsive. Loading times are reduced and for its price you’ll enjoy using one of the faster Android tablets at an affordable price.

As with the HD 8 complaints revolve around bloatware and mandatory Amazon apps that hassle you with advertisements.

Our Verdict: An ideal tablet of choice for consumers looking for a responsive, no-frills Android tablet at an affordable price.

Our Verdict
  • Brand: Lenovo
  • Dimensions: 24.41 x 0.81 x 15.32 cm
  • Weight: 460 Grams
  • Hard drive size: 32 Gb
  • Screen display size: 10.3 Inches

  • RAM: 2 Gb

With plenty of processing muscle thanks to its octa-core 1.8 Ghz processor and 2 Gb of RAM, the Lenova Tab M10 Plus is an ideal tablet for first-time users looking for something affordable.

Light and sleek with a solid design, the M10 Plus is well-suited for streaming videos or reading books. You’ll be able to enjoy a few basic games with it as well, but don’t hold out for the bigger stuff.

Thanks to its dual front Dolby speakers, you can enjoy top-quality sound when playing games or watching videos. For a device within its price range, the M10 Plus offers a surprising amount of features such as facial recognition technology.

Our Verdict: While it isn’t the fastest Android tablet around, the M10 Plus punches above its weight thanks to solid performance and an affordable price.

8

Microsoft Surface Pro 7 12.3”

CHECK PRICE

Our Verdict
  • Brand: Microsoft
  • Dimensions: 33.6 x 23.8 x 7.4 cm
  • Weight: 1.88 Kilograms
  • Hard drive size: 256 Gb SSD
  • Screen display size: 12.3 inches
  • Resolution: 1080p
  • Processor Speed: 2.1 Ghz (dependent on processor)
  • RAM: 16 Gb

Not an Android tablet tablet by any means, the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 instead is one Microsoft’s most recent offerings. With its i-series processors and large screen size (12.3 inches) the Surface Pro 7 certainly blurs the lines between laptop and tablet PC.

Users of Windows would most certainly be familiar with the Surface Pro 7 and it’s features. Designed to be a workhorse for people on the go, the Surface Pro 7 is rather large and unwieldy with its 12 inch screen.

Our Verdict: For the quality that it brings to the table, not much else beats the Surface Pro 7. However as it is rather pricey, others may instead opt for an Android tablet PC.

  • Resolution: 720p HD
  • Processor Speed: UNKNOWN

The Android Y10 GO Tablet has clearly been designed to be a no frills Android tablet that caters for those purely into streaming and basic gaming. Stripped down and optimized for speed, what the y10 lacks in features, it makes up for with speed and simplicity.

Our Verdict: You pay for what you get with the latest iteration from the Android GO family. Basic entertainment at an affordable price.

Being Samsung’s premium flagship model, all of this i sto be expected. With heaps of processing power available and a gorgeous AMOLED display, the Tab S6 is without a doubt one of the top Android tablets around.

However, it is slightly let-down by issues such as price (when compared with Huawei) and issues with the AMOLED display. Some customers have also highlighted issues related to the Tab S6’s keyboard.

Our Verdict: Overall, the Tab S6 is a superior Android tablet packed with a variety of innovative features. However, given Huawei’s extensive support the Tab S6 may be outpriced by its Chinese competitors.
